Waldorf Astoria's Flame Room Cake
Summary

History repeats itself all the time and it's time to bring back a classic.  You will notice that this recipe does not use cream cheese in the frosting, that's because it was not used in the original Flame Room Cake.  Try this recipe as it was originally created, you'll probably throw rocks at any other version.

Ingredients:
2 eggs
2 ounces red food coloring
2 Tbls cocoa
1 cup buttermilk
2 ¼ cups cake flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 Tbls baking soda
1 Tbls distilled white vinegar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder.

Frosting ingredients:
3 tablespoons all purpose flour
1 cup milk
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon Madagascar vanilla extract

yields 2 (9'') cakes

Directions:  Preheat oven to 350o F (175o C).  Grease and flour 2 9-inch cake pans.

To make the cake:
In a bowl, cream together the shortening, sugar and eggs.
Make a paste with food coloring and cocoa.
Add to shortening mixture.
Add salt and buttermilk to mixture.
Add flour, vanilla and baking soda in that order.
Mix.
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pans.
Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cake comes out clean or with moist crumbs, about 30 minutes.
Allow to cool completely before frosting.

To Make Frosting:
Cook 3 tablespoons flour and 1 cup milk until thick, and then cool.
Cream together 1 cup confectioners' sugar, 1 cup butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla until fluffy. I know you're tired, just keep fluff'n.  Key to great frosting.
Add to flour mixture.
Cut layers of cake in half lengthwise.
Spread frosting on each half.
Stack and frost over all.

Note:  If you're tired of fluff'n...git that husband of yours to git you one of those fancy electric mixers.  Lol!!
